Parmi les grandes questions que pose l\u2019\u00e9tude de notre syst\u00e8me solaire, l\u2019une des plus actives est la recherche de la vie. On le sait, la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019eau sur une plan\u00e8te pourrait contribuer fortement \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper la vie. Alors que de plus en plus d\u2019indices sugg\u00e8rent que la vie a pu exister sur Mars<\/a>, les agences spatiales internationales recherchent des traces d\u2019eau \u00e0 sa surface<\/a>. Selon une nouvelle \u00e9tude, il se pourrait que certains indices se trouvent dans la roche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019h\u00e9matite, une roche min\u00e9rale compos\u00e9e d\u2019oxyde de fer, est tr\u00e8s r\u00e9pandue sur Terre. Elle se trouve sous plusieurs formes et dans des endroits vari\u00e9s. Le professeur Peter J. Heaney et l\u2019\u00e9tudiante en doctorat Athena Chen ont analys\u00e9 certains \u00e9chantillons de cette roche pr\u00e9lev\u00e9s au 19\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Et surprise, ces roches contiennent \u00e9galement\u2026 de l\u2019eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019h\u00e9matite, une roche min\u00e9rale qui, sous certaines conditions, peut contenir de l\u2019eau<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initialement, les deux scientifiques cherchaient \u00e0 cristalliser des h\u00e9matites. Mais au cours de l\u2019analyse d\u2019un \u00e9chantillon, Athena Chen a d\u00e9couvert une roche \u00e0 le teneur en oxyde de fer trop pauvre. Lorsqu\u2019elle a fait part de ce constat \u00e0 Peter Heaney, les deux scientifiques se sont int\u00e9ress\u00e9s \u00e0 d\u2019autres \u00e9tudes, deux en particulier qui avaient constat\u00e9 la m\u00eame chose, dans les ann\u00e9es 1840.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les scientifiques en question, Rudolf Hermann et August Breithaupt, avaient chacun de leur c\u00f4t\u00e9 observ\u00e9 des cas similaires. Les h\u00e9matites \u00e9taient pauvres en oxyde de fer, et contenaient de l\u2019eau. Les travaux de ces deux scientifiques avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 rejet\u00e9s par d\u2019autres \u00e9tudes au d\u00e9but du 20\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pourtant, Amanda Chen et Peter Heaney ont bien constat\u00e9 les m\u00eames choses. Ils ont donc cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 analyser les m\u00eames \u00e9chantillons que leurs confr\u00e8res. Apr\u00e8s avoir analys\u00e9 ces \u00e9chantillons avec des m\u00e9thodes modernes, Amanda Chen a constat\u00e9 que les h\u00e9matites \u00e9taient en effet, pauvres en fer. A la place, elle y trouv\u00e9 des mol\u00e9cules d\u2019hydroxyle, r\u00e9sultant d\u2019eau stock\u00e9e dans le min\u00e9ral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les h\u00e9matites pr\u00e9sentes sur Mars pourraient contenir de l\u2019eau<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

La NASA a d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 confirm\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019eau sur Mars. De plus en plus d\u2019indices indiquent que Mars comporte des lacs souterrains, ou m\u00eame des oc\u00e9ans<\/a>, mais il semble que les roches en surface pourraient \u00e9galement contenir de l\u2019eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 2004, la NASA, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son rover Opportunity, a d\u00e9couvert sur Mars des concr\u00e9tions de min\u00e9raux, qui se sont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9es \u00eatre\u2026 des h\u00e9matites. Celles-ci ont \u00e9t\u00e9 baptis\u00e9es \u00ab\u00a0myrtilles\u00a0\u00bb en raison de leur forme. Malheureusement, le rover ne pouvait pas analyser en profondeur ces min\u00e9raux pour constater ou non la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019eau \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En parall\u00e8le, Amanda Chen a d\u00e9termin\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 149 degr\u00e9s Celsius, et un environnement comportant de l\u2019eau alcaline, l\u2019hydroh\u00e9matite participe \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des couches s\u00e9dimentaires. \u00ab Une grande partie de la surface de Mars est apparemment apparue lorsque la surface \u00e9tait plus humide et que des oxydes de fer se sont pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9s de cette eau. \u00bb a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Peter Heaney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u2019apr\u00e8s Heaney, la forme de myrtilles des concr\u00e9tions min\u00e9rales pr\u00e9sentes sur Mars donne \u00e9galement un indice. \u00ab Sur Terre, ces structures sph\u00e9riques sont de l’hydroh\u00e9matite, il me semble donc raisonnable de supposer que les cailloux rouge vif sur Mars sont de l’hydroh\u00e9matite \u00bb a-t-il compl\u00e9t\u00e9. D\u2019apr\u00e8s lui, il se pourrait que l\u2019aridit\u00e9 de Mars pourrait induire que l\u2019h\u00e9matite \u00e0 sa surface contienne de l\u2019eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
