Il y a deux mois, le t\u00e9lescope spatial James Webb avait \u00e9t\u00e9 endommag\u00e9 \u00e0 la suite d’un impact avec un microm\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde<\/a> (une petite particule de mati\u00e8re se d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant dans l’espace, dont la masse ne d\u00e9passe pas un gramme). Si la NASA avait d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu’il n’y avait que peu de dommages, un nouveau rapport de 55 pages d\u00e9montre que le t\u00e9lescope a subi un \u00ab\u00a0changement significatif non corrigible<\/em> \u00bb \u00e0 la suite de l’impact. Les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts n’ont pas arr\u00eat\u00e9 le t\u00e9lescope, mais seul le temps nous dira si cela deviendra un probl\u00e8me, ou non.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un changement de trajectoire non corrigible, mais sans cons\u00e9quences pour l’instant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Le t\u00e9lescope spatial James Webb est l’un des engins spatiaux les plus ambitieux que la NASA ou n’importe quelle agence spatiale ait d\u00e9velopp\u00e9. Il est actuellement et approximativement situ\u00e9 \u00e0 1,5\u00a0million de kilom\u00e8tres de la Terre, ce qui correspond\u00a0au point de Lagrange L2 qu\u2019il avait atteint plus t\u00f4t cette ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En mai dernier, James Webb avait \u00e9t\u00e9 impact\u00e9 par un microm\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde qui, heureusement, ne l’avait pas s\u00e9rieusement endommag\u00e9. L\u2019agence spatiale am\u00e9ricaine avait confirm\u00e9 qu\u2019il pourrait toujours poursuivre sa mission scientifique<\/a>, m\u00eame si l’un des 18 segments hexagonaux de son miroir dor\u00e9<\/strong> avait subi des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cependant, plusieurs gros titres vantent d\u00e9sormais les donn\u00e9es d’un nouveau rapport de 55 pages<\/strong> qui indique que le t\u00e9lescope a subi un \u00ab\u00a0changement incorrigible<\/em> \u00bb de trajectoire. Mais est-ce aussi grave que \u00e7a en a l’air ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiblement, non. Du moins, pas<\/strong> pour l’instant,<\/strong> ces changements ne posant a priori aucun probl\u00e8me<\/strong> \u00e0 l’\u00e9quipe James Webb. Les dommages en question, qui ne concernent pour rappel que l’un des 18 miroirs hexagonaux dor\u00e9s du t\u00e9lescope, n’emp\u00eachent pas les 17 autres de fonctionner. La NASA affirme, \u00e0 l’heure actuelle, que le t\u00e9lescope est toujours pleinement capable de r\u00e9aliser les d\u00e9couvertes<\/strong> pour lesquelles il a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces dommages causeront-ils des probl\u00e8mes \u00e0 l’avenir\u00a0? Malheureusement, seul le temps nous le dira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
