La fin de vie d\u2019une \u00e9toile est relativement bien connue des astronomes. <\/strong>Suivant sa taille une s\u00e9rie d\u2019\u00e9tapes va se produire pour aboutir \u00e0 la disparition de l\u2019astre. Les \u00e9toiles massives<\/strong>, de plus de 6 masses solaires, vont voir la fusion de leur hydrog\u00e8ne acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e par catalyse. Quand la fusion ne peut plus avoir lieu et que plus rien ne s’oppose \u00e0 la force de gravitation, l\u2019\u00e9toile s\u2019effondre sur elle-m\u00eame<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans ce cas, elle se transforme en supernova<\/strong> puis en \u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons ou en trou noir (dont le plus proche de la Terre vient d’\u00eatre d\u00e9couvert \u00e0 seulement 1000 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re). Une supernova est donc l\u2019implosion d\u2019une \u00e9toile en fin de vie. Elle est suivie d\u2019une explosion gigantesque qui produit une fantastique quantit\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re <\/strong>pendant une br\u00e8ve p\u00e9riode, de l\u2019ordre de quelques mois. La lumi\u00e8re est si forte qu\u2019une supernova issue de notre galaxie ou d\u2019une galaxie proche peut \u00eatre observ\u00e9e depuis la Terre, \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153il nu, et m\u00eame parfois en plein jour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le cas de l\u2019\u00e9toile hyperg\u00e9ante de la galaxie naine de Kinman<\/strong> est unique puisque les astronomes ont not\u00e9 sa disparition pure et simple<\/strong>. Elle est (ou \u00e9tait) situ\u00e9e dans la galaxie PHL 293B situ\u00e9e \u00e0 75 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re de la Terre dans la constellation du Verseau. 100 fois plus grosse que notre Soleil<\/strong>, elle \u00e9tait l\u2019une des tr\u00e8s rares \u00e9toiles variables hyperg\u00e9antes bleues r\u00e9pertori\u00e9es.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alors qu\u2019elle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9e \u00e0 de nombreuses reprises entre 2001 et 2011, elle reste invisible aux diff\u00e9rents appareils qui \u00e9quipent le t\u00e9lescope g\u00e9ant VLT<\/strong> se trouvant au Chili et qui a permis d’observer la naissance d’une plan\u00e8te. Elle est introuvable par le spectrographe Espresso et par X-Shooter. Si elle \u00e9tait pass\u00e9e par le stade de supernova, les instruments l\u2019auraient d\u00e9tect\u00e9e. Il n\u2019y a donc que 2 hypoth\u00e8ses<\/strong> : soit sa luminosit\u00e9 a tellement baiss\u00e9 qu\u2019elle est devenue ind\u00e9tectable<\/strong> par nos outils d\u2019observation, soit elle s\u2019est directement transform\u00e9e en trou noir sans explosion<\/strong>. Aucun de ces 2 cas n\u2019avait encore \u00e9t\u00e9 rencontr\u00e9 par les scientifiques. Le satellite Hubble sera mis \u00e0 contribution pour y voir plus clair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
